Having a website is important. We all know that. So, how do you get your website to rank on Google? How do you drive traffic to your site? How do you drive visitors to your site over competitors?

From alt tags to performance, here are our top 5 SEO tips & tricks:

Update Content Regularly

By consistently posting content to your site, it will increase your site’s relevance and will give visitors a reason to come back to your website. The type of content your business can post depends on the industry. For example, Agency Media posts regular blog posts, such as this one! This gives visitors a reason to come back to your site.

Use of Alt Tags

Now, what does this mean? Computers cannot recognize what pictures and videos are (yet), so properly naming these on the backend of your website can make a huge difference. For example, if Agency Media posted a video on our website about a recruitment video, on the backend, the file name would be something along the lines of “recruitment-agency-media”

Responsiveness

About 50% on website visitors are using a smartphone. Optimize your website for the use of desktop and mobile; this includes tablets! Google now ranks websites over others if it is mobile friendly.

Metadata

Optimizing your site to include <h1> and <h2> titles and headings. Having title metas are the page titles of landing pages on your website. Google will recognize this as hierarchy and help understand what that landing page is about.

Keywords & Content

Each page on your website should have approximately 300-500 words per page. Approximately 5% of those should be keywords. This includes short-tail and long-tail keywords. The best way to think about keywords is “what do you want your customers to search for when thinking about your business.” Google now recognizes both short and long tail keywords, so optimizing sentence structure, grammar and punctuation can increase SEO.

Additional Tip: Install an SSL certificate if you don’t already have one to get rid of the “not secure” tab you’ll see at the top of the URL. This shows visitors your site can be trusted.

SEO can take 4-6 months to kick in, so don’t get discouraged!
