What’s an Overview Video?

Believe it or not, most of our clients have no idea what type of video they should be making. They just know they want to do a video because someone told them they should and that’s exactly what we want to help them accomplish. Budget plays a major role in whether or not a company should be spending money on video. But for the sake of this article, let’s assume that they are needing it for some sort of marketing purpose. The client needs to put out compelling content to attract new customers as well as following up with their current customers. They want to start running ads this year, and are in the process of refreshing their website (hopefully by us!)

A great way to get into creating content for your business is by having a “ Company Overview Video”. This sounds pretty straightforward, and for the most part it is. It’s an “About Us” video that can help share and tell your company’s compelling story. These work great on an About Us page on your website, or posted to your preferred social media platform. If you have no idea where to start, this would be the place to go.

An overview video, like anything can come in various shapes and sizes. For example, it can be interview based, where we hear from the key stakeholders of your business. This method is a great way to put personality behind the company and can allow your customer to connect emotionally with you before they even meet with you.

Another variation of an overview video style is for it to be narration based. If you’re not too keen to put yourself on camera, this may be a fitting option for you. Narration based videos allow you to remove yourself from the picture, and have the company and the work you do, or products you sell be at the forefront. This can come across a little less personal, but they are still very effective.

Similar to the narration style videos mentioned above, Product and Service Based videos are focused on the product or service that you offer to your customers. It’s very straightforward and highlights the work over anything else.

The list of overview video types can go on, and your styles can differentiate. One of our clients, eVac – WPS Disaster Management Solutions, needed an overview video for their mobile app but did not want to be on camera, and didn’t want to have a narration based video. They wanted to keep the customers entertained and engaged so they tasked us to create an About Us Video that had an actor speaking directly to the camera but in a more commercial type vibe.

Regardless of what style you choose, creating a company overview video for your company will allow you to tell a viewer or potential customer who you are, what you do, why you do it and ultimately why you think you’re better than your competitors. You can even have your clients show up in your video and tell new clients why you’re the best.

In a world that is so noisy, a video can allow you to control how you want your customers to see you. If you feel you do world class work, but are small in comparison to your competitors, video can be the way to reframe that thought.

And more importantly, it gets you into the content game. This style of video should be what we call evergreen, something that can last more than a month on your website and not feel dated. It gets you started on supporting visuals that make up your Overview Video, and allows you to repurpose it for web banners, micro videos, and even social media clips.
